20 Miles with Some Issues Along the Way

Earlier this week, there was a heatwave, so my long run didn't happen until today (June 23, 2011).


Mile 8 - I was moseying along, and some large pebble fell into the heel of my shoe.  I took a few steps, and it was obviously large.  I then pulled over and emptied it out of my shoe.  I retied my shoes, took a few steps forward, then realize I had tied my shoelaces too tight.  Had to pull over again and retie them laces.

Mile 12 - It seems the pebble's smaller sibling, friend or relative fell into my heel this time as I was moseying along.  I had to pullover and empty it out of my shoe.

Mile 18 - Oh, IT Band, you sure didn't like me during this mile.  I pulled over 2x to stretch, which didn't seem to help.  I walked for a bit which seem to have helped.

Mile 19 - Tried to regroup.

2011 Rock 'n' Roll Los Angeles Half Marathon: New Course. Event date: October 30, 2011

I recently flipped thru the June 2011 issue of Competitor and missed the small caption in an ad for the Rock 'n' Roll Los Angeles Half Marathon, but one of my friends caught it and mentioned that this year's event will feature a new course.

I ran in the 2010 Inaugural Rock 'n' Roll Los Angeles Half Marathon, and it was a point to point course, requiring all participants to either board shuttles to the start or be dropped off near the start and then finishing downtown.

The ad says, "For 2011, new course:  Start and Finish downtown at L.A. Live."

This certainly puts a spin on the event for those who ran it in 2010.

Currently, a new course map has yet to be posted on the official event website.

Souvenir Baseball. June 18, 2011

I very rarely go home with a souvenir baseball from a baseball game.

Today (June 18, 2011) was the exception.  The World Series Champions San Francisco Giants played the Oakland A's at the Overstock (Oakland Coliseum).

I know it's not as glamorous as catching a ball hit into the stands during a game or during batting practice with a glove.  But, I snagged one by scooping it off the floor during batting practice.

Product Review: New Formula Orange FRS

FRS recently changed their formula as well as their can design.

I picked up a can at the Oakland Running Festival Expo in March 2011, and the can just sat and sat and sat around at my place.

The other day, I finally decided to drink it.

Initially, I was skeptical about the new formula.  I liked the old formula.  The new formula contained stevia.  From my previous experience with drinks containing stevia, I found them to just taste nasty.

To my surprise, the new formula FRS tasted fine and certainly didn't taste bad.  It tasted a bit sweeter than the old formula.

Gone Volunteering at the 2011 Brazen Racing Trail Quake Half Marathon, 10k and 5k Events at Sanborn Park, Saratoga, CA.

Twas 3 days after my 20 miler.  Yesterday, I went to the gym, and my legs were tired on the hamster wheel and on the elliptical.

Today, my tired legs and the rest of me went volunteering at the 2011 Brazen Racing Trail Quake Half Marathon, 10k and 5k events at Sanborn County Park, Saratoga, CA.

Boy!  Am I glad my legs were not running anything on that course.  A huge portion of the finishers who came in were talking about how large this hill was along the course.  I don't even want to imagine how my tired legs would have fared against such a hill.

Gait analysis is done on the upper deck of the double decker bus.

I passed on the gait analysis as I already know what type of running shoes I should get, but for those new to running, a gait analysis might prevent some unhappy feet.

They also gave away prizes.  I believe everyone who filled out a card won something.  Everyone also gets entered into a drawing for a trip to a Rock 'n Roll Marathon event for 2012

20 Miles. June 9, 2011

The last time I attempted a 20 miler was on May 27, 2011, I believe.  It was a bust because I went out too fast, and my mileage base just wasn't there.

I went back to the drawing board and got a bunch of 10k's underneath my belt for short runs and/or maintenance runs to prep up for another 20 miler.

This time I was successful.  Hurray for me!!!

My new shoe debut:  Asics Gel Nimbus 11.

Downed:  4 Strawberry Banana PowerBar gels; 2 packs of Margarita with Salt Clif Shok Bloks; and downed some Accelerade.

Post-20 miler, 0.52 mile walk cool down @ 0:11:53 (49 calories burned)

Walked 10.46 Miles and 1 GU Wasn't Enough

Although I have no desire to walk a half marathon, I tried to finish off a bunch of errands today and ended up walking a lot.

Gone Cheering at the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, San Francisco, CA. June 5, 2011

Every now and then, someone would ask me if I would try a triathlon, which is an event combining the 3 disciplines of swimming, bicycling and running.

Over the past weekend, there was the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon and expo.  I just happened to be in the area and went cheering with a cowbell before passing thru their expo.

The participants didn't really escape from the famous Alcatraz prison.  They jump off a boat into the water.

After their swim portion, they pedaled off on a bicycle.

Their last leg is the run portion.


After cheering for a short while, I milled thru their expo.  Their expo seemed pretty small and its size seem comparable to an expo for a small running event.

I picked up the following items from vendors/sponsors:

1. a very delicious cup of Strawberry Chobani yogurt
2. a bag of rice from Mahatma
3. a very handy bottle opener key-chain from Sierra Nevada
4. a sports bottle from Sports Basement

I <3 Sports Basement.

As for me doing a triathlon, currently, I seem to have the running part down and know how to swim.  But, I really can't afford one of those nice bicycles for any triathlon, so I don't think any triathlon is in my near future.

In the far distant future, I wouldn't rule out doing a triathlon though.

Braving the Elements while Volunteering at the Nitro Trail Half Marathon, 10k and 5k, Richmond, CA. June 4, 2011

I decided to volunteer for Brazen Racing's Nitro Trail Half Marathon, 10k and 5k event, since I was free that day and wanted to help others enjoy their running event.

Point Pinole was the scene of the Nitro Trail events.

Point Pinole was once the site of the Giant Powder Company, an explosives company who went out of business a long time ago.  The site is currently a registered California landmark.

Going in, I knew the weather was going to be wet and rainy, but I didn't expect things to be also incredibly windy.

I was assigned to Aid Station #1.

I knew things were going bad when:

1. Empty cups on the table would not stay on the table for us to fill them with water and sports drinks.  They were blown off the table.
2. The flow of water/sports drinks I was pouring was blown towards the outside of the cup, spilling the fluid onto the ground.
3. Small cups of dry snacks, including pretzels, M&M's and Skittles, were blown off the table.

The worst part was the wind took out our aid station's canopy.

We were literally left out in the wind and rain for quite some time because our canopy broke.

My snowboarding jacket and rain paints seem to hold up for the length of time we were out there, but my nose kept running.  Had it been much longer, I don't think my jacket would have held up.

I really felt bad for 2 of my aid station colleagues.  They had jeans on for pants.

It felt like an eternity out there, but eventually, the course sweeper came thru.

We then packed up everything into a truck and headed back to the Start/Finish area, where I warmed up with 2 cups of coffee.


Despite the rough experience at this event, I will still volunteer at running events because without volunteers, running events just would not be possible.  I'll just make sure if I volunteer at this location to put on an extra layer of clothing.
